Getting Support in Menopause
With any big thing that happens in your life, having support is essential.
Menopause is no exception. Even though menopause is a personal journey, the things that happen to you in menopause can affect those around you as well.
Getting support throughout your journey is key to navigating your journey easier.
Support can come from many sources like family, a coach, a doula (yes it’s a thing), and outside organizations.
As a menopause coach I encourage my clients to talk to their families and partners about what is happening with their journey. In menopause some of the more outward symptoms are hot flashes, and irritability. These are things that can affect not only you but those around you. As I was going through peri-menopause, I had a conversation with my husband about my irritability because I noticed it after the words were already out or my body language gave off a not so nice vibe. I asked him to let me know when I would pop off at him because I did not realize I was doing it. After a while I would notice when the irritation was happening and took a few beats before I spoke.
There are some things you can do to navigate through your irritability and even your hot flashes. Breath work is one way I have found that works, take a breath in counting to 5, hold it for a count of 5, and then breathe out to a count of 7. This gives you time to regroup and center yourself. Meditation or a simple mantra (everything ok is my favorite) in the moment helps to gather yourself as well. These methods can also help when you are having hot flashes. You are taking your mind off of the flash or irritation and giving yourself time to gather your thoughts and emotions.
Menopause is not a team sport but with support, it can make it easier. If you have someone to talk to and through your journey, you can better understand what is going on with you.
